Dirty Funk
The best thing that happened to the club scene since the rise of the electronic sounds in the early eighties surely is the rise of another groove: Dirty Funk.
You might think it a tad premature to make such a claim, as the Dirty Funk duo is mostly known in Cape Town (yep, Cape Town again!) but every great sound/genre in history started somewhere – think Hip Hop during the seventies in the Bronx, Rock & Roll in Cleveland in the fifties, and Kwaito in the nineties in JHB) Dirty Funk is young, Dirty Funk is fresh and Dirty Funk is on our playlists everytime we have a party.
This electro/hip hop duo consists of Dale Johnson aka “The Deputy” and Kaelem “Konjatis” Fakier. As young as eight Dale realized his passion for music and after Soundscape Productions picked up on his talent, he was dj’ing all over Cape Town. At one of these gigs Dale met Kaelem. Sharing the same passion and vision they teamed up and formed Dirty Funk.
The past few months DF have mostly been in studio - juggling the recording of tracks for their album: Good Girls and Liquor, and producing tracks for other artists such as the remix of “Law Of Attraction” for Josie Field. The DF album: “Good Girls and Liquor” is due for release next week and includes collaborations with artists such as Kia Johnson from KFM, Randall Jermaine, Ray C and Joe Meister. The launch party of this album will take place at Stones in Kuilsrivier on the 22nd April. This event will include performances by artists such as Ray C, Suburban Menace, Redds, Randall Jermaine, the SAMA award nominee Chad Saaiman, and The Stereotypes.
During the next few months DF will work on new material and will start plotting their take-over of the Gauteng club scene.
