I started playing guitar at age 15 but only recently started recording some of my songs. I attended classical guitar lessons for two years, but I could never get the theory right. I was more of a practical guitarist, learning my own style.
I only used to play guitar and thought that singing isn't for me, but one day I gave it a shot and it seemed as if people liked my voice. I started writing my own vocal songs, my first being TWEE LANG SOMERNAGTE, which was written after a traumatic night in summer, which seemed to be the season most of my traumatic nights occur in. The next vocal song was DOOLHOF VAN DIE DOOD, which I wrote during one of my "spiritual quests".
My lyrics are my poetry. I don't like writing poetry, but singing it is another story. I feel that Afrikaans is one of the most lyrical languages I've ever heard (next to Russian), that's why I sing in Afrikaans and not English. Still, my Afrikaans music isn't much like anything around, but most people have compared my singing to Koos du Plessis.
I have several influences in my music, for example, black metal and classical music. I tried to formulate my own sound. It's not something you can dance to, so don't even try! It's not something that will lift your spirits, so prepare to be depressed! It's something that touches my soul, but if it touches yours as well, then I'm very happy.
I was first drawn to the classical guitar sound when I listened to Dark Medieval Times from Satyricon. I like the dark sound and I rarely use happy clappy major chords.
I have one more vocal song to record and about three instrumental songs. I'm also working on another vocal song and I'm contemplating writing lyrics for the existing instrumental songs. I just need to record them.
