Love Jones

Some Streetlamp, Local and International music news.

STREETLAMP NEWS

So everywhere you look around on the web, you find companies involved in the music industry, doing some sort of research on the effect of music downloads on the music industry as such.  This is a very hot topic, and one which I’d love to discuss with you as a separate news item next week.  Fact is that the demand for music in digital format is huge. And we are quite happy to be in the middle of it all – offering good quality downloads at a minimal cost.  Music has never been so popular, and so readily available to fans as now.  The opportunity for unknown bands and artists to get exposure is phenomenal!

We’re in the process of adding many more bands to the Streetlamp collection, with our fan-base growing daily.  Thank you so much for everyone who joined our Facebook group this week.

Dirk Erasmus (dIRCSTRO) has uploaded some really funky new tunes and seems to come up with new ideas and new songs on a daily basis!  Wow – wish my right brain was THAT developed!

Our web developer, Adriaan Nel, has added a cool counter on the homepage so we can see how our numbers are climbing daily – thanks for that, dude!

We’ve added placeholders on the site where we have advertising space available.  In keeping with the spirit of the Streetlamp concept to support our artists, the revenue generated from ads will be shared with them – the artists.  We’ll have more on this as soon as we’re in a position to start charging for ads on the site.

I performed my new song at Debut in Lynwood, Pretoria for the first time.  My nerves got the better of me and I repeated the first verse and chorus for most of the song!  The good thing about performing your own stuff is that nobody knows the words – so nobody noticed!! (I hope)

LOCAL SCENE

Love Jones to launch their latest music video

Top SA band, Love Jones, will be launching the music video for the latest Love Jones single “Limozeen”. This video is regarded as one of the most expensive music videos filmed in South Africa this year.  Can’t wait to see it!

Chris Chameleon's “Flight of an Extraordinary Alien”

Chris Chameleon recently launched his live DVD, which was recorded in Stellenbosch Townhall earlier this year.  More than a thousand fans attended this unforgettable event.  As is typical of Chris Chameleon, fans can expect a highly entertaining production!

INTERNATIONAL

Justin Timberlake is taking a break!

At the end of November, after eighteen months of sold-out gigs, Justin Timberlake is taking a break.

His label, Tennman Records, has four artists lined up for ’08.  These include Internet sensation Esmee Denters, a rap group from Memphis called Free Sol, R&B singer Brenda Radney and songwriter Matt Morris.

This should keep him busy until he gets the urge to bring something back!

Axl Rose Is “Back in the Saddle”

Last week a Texas rock station leaked Sebastian Bach and Axl Rose’s version of Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle”.

“Saddle” instantly became the station’s most requested track.  More than anything, the song acts as a public-service announcement, proclaiming that  Guns N’ Roses is alive and kicking!

Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash also appeared on David Letterman’s couch last night to promote his new autobiography, cleverly titled "Slash: The Autobiography".

Craig David’s new album - Trust Me

UK R&B star, Craig David’s newly released fourth album is all about “letting loose and kicking back”.  "Hot Stuff” is the first single from the album and has been hailed as Craig's comeback.

Inspired by the soul of the 80’s and recorded in Havanna, the Cuban musicians gave Craig David’s music a whole new energy.

Some more Da Vinci mystery

An Italian musician claims that he found confirmation of the hidden musical composition within the religious imagery of Jesus Christ's last supper with his apostles.
In his book - "La Musica Celata" ("The Hidden Music") - Pala describes how he found clues in the Da Vinci painting that reveal the slow rhythm of the composition and the duration of each note.

Alessandro Vezzosi, a Leonardo expert and the director of a museum dedicated to the artist, said he had not seen Pala's research but that the musician's hypothesis "is plausible."

As I am Alicia Keys

27-year-old New York singer, songwriter, producer and actress is due to launch her new album, As I Am, on November 19.  This is described as her most “commercial” record so far, although diehard fans can still expect an unmistakable Keys performance.

Mika @ the World Music Awards

Although he was unable to sing his debut hit “Grace Kelly” due to laryngitis, British pop star Mika dominated the World Music Awards in Monaco and walked away with best-selling new artist, best-selling male entertainer, best-selling pop/rock artist and best-selling British artist.
