Mxit looking into music distribution

The instant messaging pioneer in South Africa, Mxit plans to enter the local music scene at the end of the month, launching a platform where unsigned South African artists can promote themselves by uploading their music, and Mxit users can then download it for free – pretty much like a mobile Myspace.

The platform will be called Mxit Music and the company plans to include music from the major international labels for download at a small fee soon.

Led Zeppelin touring the world?

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page said that his injured finger is now better and the band will resume rehearsals for the O2 Arena show in England this week.

The Cult recently leaked to reporters that Led Zeppelin will be touring in 2008, and that they will be the supporting act.

"We'll be back next year.  Because we're opening for a band you may have heard of ... the name starts with an 'L' and has a 'Z' in it," is what frontman Ian Astbury mentioned to fans at a concert held last weekend.  Sounds like The Cult is seriously seeking attention!

The 2007 35th Annual American Music Awards

The American Music Awards was held last Sunday.  It was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, and was broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.  It differs from the Grammys and Billboard awards in that the public chooses the winners.

Justin Timberlake took the honours as favourite male artist, while Fergie won the favourite female artist category in the Pop and Rock section.

Red Hot Legal Showdown

A show called Californication, which stars and is co-produced by David Duchovny, has the Red Hot Chili Peppers up in arms.  The Peppers are suing Showtime and have demanded that all profits made thus far be paid to the band.

“Californication is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career,” frontman Anthony Kiedis said in a statement. “For some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right.”

Universal Nails Remixes

A few years ago, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails persuaded his label, Universal Music Group, to let him post master recordings on his website for fans to remix.

Communities developed, web sites were created and radio stations even played some of the fans' mixes, according to Reznor.  An album of fan remixes was released, and then Reznor decided to post the fan remixes on the website.

In the meantime, Universal filed suit against YouTube and MySpace due to copyright issues.  On Saturday, Universal demanded that the fan remixes be removed from the website, as it represents the same technical copyright violation they are fighting.

Reznor is not impressed!

And Finally...

We leave you with some humorous irony found on Zoopy.com and a UK based band called Slow Club with their song "Summer Shakedown".  Their sound is very catchy, yet very unsophisticated.  Gotta love it!

Until next week!
