Fresh blood, celebrity showers and headbanging Chinese

Streetlamp News

The year is speeding to an end and public schools throughout South Africa today closed for the Christmas holidays.  There’s still a whole heap of events taking place throughout December though, and we’ll gather as much info as possible and post it on the site to keep you updated and ready for the action!

The past week saw 3 new artists join our ranks, with a fan base very close to reaching the 100 mark.  This is very exciting, since the site is still spanking new!

Please download and listen to the new songs.  Rate them too.  If you consider yourself a bit of a music fundi – leave a comment for the bands and artists.  It helps a lot to know what the audience thinks of their music.  If you’re not that much of a music genius – just tell them that it really rocks big time or that it sucks ass.  The first ten downloads are always free, so remember what they say about the early bird!  Now, about our new artists:

Louise Eksteen is involved with various groups and bands and has toured London with her gigs.  Her sound is electronica with a hard-hitting gothic influence.  Have a listen to Clandestine Carnivore:

Geran makes rock music with an acoustic, sometimes classic sound to it.  His debut album was recorded this year, and his first music video was aired on MK a couple days ago.  Listen to My Friend:

Cape Town rockers Damn Right describes their style as “explosively unapologetic, fast paced rock” and after listening to their tracks, one has to agree!  Check out their first single Heartbreakers released in September of this year.

46664 – The number to fight the beast

Cape Town. November 2003. The stage was set from where the message of HIV AIDS & the danger of the pandemic that’s creating havoc under our people where broadcasted to over 2 billion people in 160 countries.  This was the biggest HIV AIDS awareness initiative ever launched to inform the world of the dangers of this potentially genocidal virus lurking all around us.

With the help of Mr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, or Madiba, as he might be better known to the world, 30 superstars from all over the world where roped in to add to the impact of this event.

December 2007 brings Ellis Park & Johannesburg the opportunity to launch this initiative to even greater heights!

With the likes of International acts such as Live, Annie Lennox, Goo Goo Dolls, Johnny Clegg, Ludacris, Razorlight & Corinne Baily Rae, the spotlight will once again be shined on HIV AIDS, to remind us that not enough is being done to help fight this immense threat.

These global superstars will be accompanied by the cream of South Africa’s own music industry, and fans can expect great entertainment from the likes of Danny K, Jamali, Arno Carstens, The Parlotones, Malaika, Just Jinjer & many more.

This charitable fundraiser primarily focuses on children & young adults, as they are the future of generations to come and must to be informed and educated now.

Ticket prices started at R120, but unfortunately the show has already sold out.  The upside is that this shows the strong support coming from the South African public.

For those not able to make it – you will be able to follow the show from 16:00 on SABC2.

For more info, or if you would like to pledge your support to this charitable cause, go to the official 46664 website.

How to spend your Sundays in Cape Town

You can catch the popular Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts from November to April at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Rhodes Drive, Newlands, Cape Town) on Sundays from 17:30 - 18:30.

Take your friends and family and slip blissfully into another week listening to SA’s best music with a bottle of Cape wine and a delicious picnic.

On Sunday, 2 December 2007, former Boo! frontman, Chris Chameleon, will join Blk Sonshine’s guitarist and composer Neo Muyanga for a sunset concert.  Blk Sonshine is popular throughout southern Africa for their soul and jazz-infused music.  Combined with the works of versatile Chris Chameleon, this should make for a highly enjoyable afternoon out!  Make sure you get there early to pick the best spot!

Danny K loves his shower and shows it!

Danny K went out to buy some bathroom and kitchen fittings for his new house and landed himself a new celebrity status: The face of On-Tap plumbing supplies!

Staff spotted Danny in one of the stores and came up with the brilliant idea.  Danny was so impressed with their range of products and high service levels that he instantly agreed to be the company’s celebrity face for marketing and PR purposes. (For a while, anyway.)

Indian Rock band?

Having been the capital of several empires in ancient India, one would not expect Delhi to produce a successful rock band.  Parikrama had UK music lovers nudging for entry into Someplace Else, The Park.  Those who did managed to get in, were not disappointed as the Indian rockers had them jumping, screaming and head banging to Iron Maiden covers as well as some original tunes.

Looks like a really cool bunch of guys.  What we find a bit weird is the lead singer’s screaming voice – we just can’t decide if it works or not?  Check out a clip from the show and see for yourself.

For All the Rock in China

Playing to crowds who may be seeing their first foreign band can be intoxicating.  These days, big acts are exposing the hugely unexploited Chinese music industry to western rock.

Peter Grosslight, worldwide head of music for the William Morris Agency, says, “There’s 1.3 billion people there. It’s becoming a much wealthier place. How can we ignore that?”

Linkin Park’s tour in Southeast Asia grossed $750,000, which is comparable to the band’s take on recent American tours.

Rock ’n’ roll thrived in the 80s and then went underground in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. Chinese rock was resurrected with the arrival of the Internet, and western record industries quickly capitalized on the emerging market.

Despite challenges like widespread piracy, minimal touring infrastructure and lack of royalty control, Beyoncé, Eric Clapton, Nine Inch Nails, Avril Lavigne and Sonic Youth have all toured China this year.

Sarkozy slams music pirates

A new anti-piracy system, endorsed by French president Nicholas Sarkozy, has been introduced in France.  This system will target Internet users who download movies and music illegally.

An independent authority, supervised by a judge, will monitor bandwidth usage and issue warning messages to customers who are using the Internet for illegal downloads, especially using the BitTorrent protocol.  If users ignore repeated warnings, their accounts could be suspended or even closed.

"We run the risk of witnessing a genuine destruction of culture," the president said.  "The Internet must not become a high-tech Far West, a lawless zone where outlaws can pillage works with abandon or, worse, trade in them in total impunity. And on whose backs? On artists' backs," he also added.

Lily Allen to quit music?

Rumours are that Lily Allen, 22, has vowed to retire from music when she reaches 25, and will only make one more album.

Allen’s popularity exploded when she uploaded demo tracks to her MySpace account in November 2005.  Her debut album, Alright, Still, with the hit single, Smile, followed in 2006.

Recently, Allen said that "It's a great job but it doesn't leave time for what's important - like having a family."  Not only is her television career distracting her from her singing, apparently, she is also eager to start a family.

They tried to make me go on stage, but I said no, no, no

In a statement from Universal, Amy Winehouse has been forced to cancel all remaining live and promotional appearances for the rest of 2007 to “take complete rest and deal with her health issues.” This, says Amy, is the result of the strain caused by her husband’s incarceration at London's Pentonville Prison.  He was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in relation to a charge of grievous bodily harm.

Reports of unimpressed fans storming out because of her incoherent singing and delayed start times have added to the stressed-out singer’s heartaches.  On Monday night, the erratic singer ditched her tour crew after her gig in Brighton, England, and headed back to London in a taxi.

Amy says, "I can't give it my all onstage without my Blake. I'm so sorry but I don't want to do the shows half-heartedly; I love singing. My husband is everything to me and without him it's just not the same."

Winehouse made her debut in 2003 with her album, Frank.  The singer's bulimia, drug and alcohol problems became regular tabloid news following her 2006 hit single, Rehab, from the Back to Black album.

Hannibal to entertain the Aussies

Australia is in for a treat as Oscar winning actor, Sir Anthony Hopkins, is due to showcase his little-known talent for composing music.  According to Perth-based musician and movie score mixer, Malcolm Luker, Anthony is "…a great pianist and an incredibly pleasant and softly spoken man."  The shows will feature in most major Australian cities and will include the actor playing music, narrating stories over a live orchestra and telling anecdotes about his movie career.  Luker says that the show will happen either next year or early 2009.

5 Jacksons

The 1970’s pop phenomenon, the Jackson Five, could be touring again during 2008!
On BBC 6 Music, Jermaine Jackson said that, "We feel we have to do it one more time. We owe that to the fans and to the public."

Will Michael be involved?  According to Jermaine, "He has to be…He is a Jackson. He was at the meetings. Michael will be involved."

The last time the group toured was in 1984.  The group only formally disbanded in 1990, a year after releasing 2300 Jackson Street.  The reunion would have happened sooner if it weren’t for Michael’s personal problems.
